The Dialectics of Mania: Spirituality and Psychiatry

One of the most difficult questions I have wrestled with since my manic and psychotic episode in 2023 is the relationship between spirituality and psychiatry. People often present these two perspectives as opposing explanations. If an experience is psychiatric, then it cannot be spiritual. If it is spiritual, then it cannot be psychiatric.

My experience suggests the relationship is far more complicated than that. During my episode, spirituality became central to how I understood what was happening. I became preoccupied with questions of creation, evolution, purpose, consciousness, and humanity's place in the universe. I believed I was living out the Seven Days of Creation and interpreted events around me through that framework. Looking back, I can clearly see that I was experiencing mania and psychosis. Yet the questions that emerged during that time did not disappear when the episode ended.

This is where the dialectic begins. Psychiatry and spirituality often ask different questions. Psychiatry asks: What happened? Why did it happen? How do we treat it? These were important questions for me. Psychiatry provided a framework for understanding mania, psychosis, sleep deprivation, impaired judgement, and the symptoms that led to my hospitalisation. Medication helped stabilise me. Hospital provided safety. Treatment reduced the intensity of the episode and helped me regain a sense of reality. In many ways, psychiatry helped me survive the experience.

Spirituality, however, was asking different questions. What does this mean? What can I learn from it? How does this fit into my life? While psychiatry helped explain the mechanics of the episode, spirituality helped me explore its meaning. It encouraged me to reflect on questions of purpose, identity, suffering, growth, and transformation.

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that the delusions and the questions underneath them are not necessarily the same thing. For example, my belief that I was literally living out the Seven Days of Creation was a product of psychosis. Yet the deeper questions that surrounded that belief remained important. How does order emerge from chaos? How do people transform through adversity? How do we create meaning from suffering? These were questions I was exploring before the episode, during the episode, and long after the episode ended. The delusion faded. The questions remained.

This is why I no longer view spirituality and psychiatry as enemies competing to explain my experience. Both contributed something valuable. Psychiatry helped me understand the symptoms. It helped keep me safe and provided tools for recovery. Spirituality helped me understand why the experience mattered to me. It gave me a framework for exploring the questions that continued to emerge after the mania had subsided. Without psychiatry, I may never have recovered from the episode. Without spirituality, I may never have found meaning in it.

Looking back, I do not believe I have to choose between the two. Psychiatry helped me survive the crisis. Spirituality helped me make sense of it. Together, they tell a more complete story than either could alone.

Perhaps that is one of the deepest dialectics of mania. The experience can be understood through both a psychiatric lens and a spiritual lens. One helps explain what happened. The other helps explore what it meant. For me, both have been essential parts of the recovery journey.
