The Dialectics of Mania: Insight and Illusion

One of the most difficult questions I have wrestled with since my manic and psychotic episode in 2023 is this: How do you separate insight from illusion?

Looking back, I can clearly see that many of the beliefs I held during my episode were delusional. I genuinely believed that I was living out the Seven Days of Creation. I interpreted events around me through that lens and became convinced that I was part of a much larger story unfolding in the world.

Today, I no longer believe those things. Yet there is a complication. While many of the beliefs themselves were illusions, not everything that emerged during that period was without value. Some of the questions I was asking, some of the ideas I was exploring, and some of the insights I gained have remained important parts of my life long after the episode ended.

This is where the dialectic emerges. We often think of psychosis as being entirely false and insight as being entirely true. My experience was far more complicated than that. During my episode, I was intensely focused on questions of creation, evolution, spirituality, purpose, meaning, and humanity's future. These interests had not suddenly appeared. They were topics I had been researching and thinking about for years. The delusion was not that I was interested in these questions. The delusion was believing that I was personally living out a cosmic narrative that explained everything happening around me. There is an important distinction between the two.

I have come to realise that many of the feelings underlying my delusions contained elements of truth, even when the explanations did not. For example, I felt that my life was undergoing a profound transformation. That feeling was real. The belief that I was literally living out the Seven Days of Creation was not.

I felt an overwhelming desire to write, create, and share ideas with the world. That feeling was real. The belief that I had been chosen to deliver a message that would immediately transform humanity was not. I felt that something important was changing in my life. That feeling was real. The explanations I constructed around those feelings were often not.

Recovery became a process of sorting through these experiences. It was not simply a matter of rejecting everything that had happened during my episode. Nor was it a matter of accepting everything as meaningful insight. Instead, recovery required me to examine each idea, each belief, and each experience and ask myself what remained true once the mania and psychosis had subsided.

Some ideas did not survive that process. Others did. In fact, many of the projects that emerged after my episode—including The Dialectics of Mania, A Turtle's Journey, The Wellness Revolution, and much of the Creation Series—grew from questions and interests that continued to hold meaning long after the episode ended.

This has changed the way I think about mania and psychosis. I no longer see them simply as experiences that are either true or false. Instead, I see them as complex mixtures of insight and illusion, meaning and misunderstanding, creativity and confusion.

The challenge of recovery is learning how to distinguish between them. For me, recovery was not about abandoning everything that emerged during my episode. It was about learning what to keep and what to let go. Some ideas belonged to the illness. Others pointed toward the person I would become after it. Perhaps that is one of the deepest dialectics of mania. Insight and illusion often arrive together. The challenge is learning how to tell them apart.
