How Can Insight Co-Exist with Psychosis?

2 min read

One of the most difficult things to explain about psychosis is that it is not always a complete absence of insight.

My book, The Dialectics of Mania, documents a psychotic episode in which I became convinced that I was living out the Seven Days of Creation. Looking back, I can clearly see that this was a break from reality. Yet it was also a period of intense creativity, reflection, and meaning-making. This presents a paradox. How can someone experience delusions while also generating ideas that prove valuable in their life?

Long before my episode, I had spent years researching evolution, spirituality, consciousness, mythology, and the hidden meanings within texts such as Genesis. During the episode, these interests became amplified and personalised. My mind attempted to weave countless ideas into a single narrative that explained everything. The result was both insight and illusion.

Some of the conclusions I reached were clearly products of psychosis. Others inspired ideas and projects that continued long after the episode ended. Since that time, I have published three of my four books, completed a seven-book Creation Series, and explored concepts such as the Wellness Revolution and the Abundance Society.

The episode itself was chaotic. It involved grandiosity, confusion, urgency, and increasingly distorted beliefs. Yet it also forced me to confront questions about meaning, purpose, creativity, and the nature of reality in ways I never had before. This is one of the reasons I use the word dialectics.

Psychosis can be frightening, overwhelming, and destructive. At the same time, people often emerge from these experiences having learned something profound about themselves, their lives, or the world around them. The challenge is learning how to separate the insight from the illusion. That, for me, has been one of the most important tasks of recovery.

The Dialectics of Mania explores these questions through my lived experience of mania, psychosis, hospitalisation, and recovery. It is now available now through Amazon, Booktopia, Abbey's, T.G. Jones and other retailers.
